Michael French was born in London and an early interest in sculpture and carving was rekindled later in life while attending a course at the City & Guilds of London School of Art, where his latent passion for drawing and sculpture came to the fore. Under the tutorship and direction of Dick Onians ARBS, at Great Missenden Adult Education centre and with Elona Bennett FRBS at Small Mansion, Gunnersbury Park, Michael’s talent and ability was encouraged and developed.
Michael works in in a diverse range of materials, including bronze, steel, lead, wood, clay and stone. But it is in wood that he finds the greatest satisfaction and challenge. Driftwood from the Thames has become a source of unique natural organic material for Michael which he carves into sculptures of strength, beauty and intrigue.
